Today we found ourselves in the tiny town of Winton. This town was established because of the plentiful water surrounding the area although you wouldn't know it today. It is basically a dust bowl town with at least 5 pubs, not bad for a small town.
We spent the morning at a newly established dinosaur dig site and laboratory. The first dinosaur bone in the area was found by a sheep farmer and from there the search for more bones intensified. They have now discovered 3 dinosaurs, 2 which were found lying together in the same pit. They are Australian natives and the bones are very fresh. We saw bones which they have just finished extracting from the soil and watched as volunteers used tiny ginders to clean up the bones.
They have named them Matilda, Clancy and Eliot. It was very interesting indeed.
We then moved onto the Waltzing Matilda Centre and found ourselves listening to the countless versions of the famous song. I think Dame Ednas was the most amusing although the version by Bill Haley and the comets sounded very much like rock around the clock! The kids had a great time here learning about the history of swagmen. Amber wanted to know why he jumped in when he knew he couldn't swim and he was goong to die!! She was sad about that.
With the temperature soaring around the high 30's we decided to give the local pool a try to refresh the tourists. Dad decided that a stroll to the pub made famous by the first rendition of the famous song might be in order. No not reall,. it was just very hot and a beer or two would hit the spot nicely.
Having cooled ourselves on the inside and outside we continued to look around this town of many attractions. We visited an opal museum and then found an open air outdoor movie theatre with deck chairs for seats which used to be the place to go on a saturday night.
The kids hit the pool again back at the campsite and cooled off before tea, ah this is the life!!
I think we have sung Waltzing Matilda nearly every day on this trip and at least 10 times today!!

ReplyDeleteLoving the journey so far really enjoying the travel stories, very relaxing feels like I'm on holidays. Photos are fantastic especially all the shots from Devils Marbles they are spectacular, the campsite is unbelievable looks like a movie set.... (Oliver needs a new updated photo of Amber that shot between the 2 rocks she looks like a supermodel.)

Winton sounds great - I always wanted to be an archaeologist. Devils Marbles campsite looks great too....real camping!

Hi guys. Though I'd drop a line before cleaning shoes and getting the kids uniforms ready for school tomorrow!(where would you rather be?) We spent the holidays on our own "mini" road trip in NSW. We enjoyed the Dubbo Zoo - it took a full day to get around it on bikes but you can do it quicker in the car. (Your ticket can be used over 2 days anyway) A word of warning, we stayed at the Big 4 Caravan Park and were robbed during the night. A window in the car was broken and my 'travel bag' stolen. 4 other campers were also robbed. You really need to keep all your valuables close to you at all times. On a brighter note, we really enjoyed the coast and all the beautiful big rivers in NSW. You are so lucky to be out there 'on the Wallaby'. Make the most of every moment and we'll look forward to reading all about it.

So glad that you are all well and enjoying your experiences. Az & I had a great time at the wedding on Friday - way too much red wine was consumed! ReplyDeleteHi Peter, you would have had red ears yesterday, Mrs Scheen was describing to the class what you look like at the moment and was going to show them photos after lunch, they all couldn't stop laughing... Oliver said "that's what he looks like every holidays!!!!!"
